On top of all that, it would lend additional credibility to a popular fan theory that Neo will serve as the villain in The Matrix 4 and is secretly a new version of the original Matrix trilogy's big bad, Agent Smith. It would also give The Matrix 4 a heightened feeling of relevancy in the era of Black Lives Matter and other continuing social protests. This idea - that regular people have the real power to bring about change, not messiahs - could end up playing a key role in the story for The Matrix 4, and reads as a natural evolution of the themes from the original Matrix trilogy. This explains why none of the different iterations of The One have been able to escape The Matrix: their power comes from the Machines, rather than from within themselves (like Dan and The Kid). Neo emphasizes this while talking to The Kid in The Matrix Reloaded, telling him he saved himself and didn't actually need his assistance. In both cases, Dan and The Kid were able to break out of The Matrix by believing in themselves and their ability to do something that seems impossible to everyone else. The Kid is also portrayed in live-action by Clayton Watson in The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, where he helps save Zion during the Machines' attack on the city.
